2020 Greening our City grant – Stream 2 Green innovations |
Project summary |
WSROC, Western Sydney University, Western Sydney Councils, together with 53 other organisations developed the Turn Down the Heat strategy, which outlines a coordinated, multi-sector approach to heat mitigation and adaptation in the region. This green innovation project will contribute to the delivery of the strategy through the 'cool with greenspace and water' driver. Currently over a third of Sydney’s urban tree species are vulnerable to summer temperature and rainfall conditions, and climate change is predicted to push additional species over their climate thresholds. More frequent and extreme heat and drought events are already resulting in greater tree failures, and many of the remaining trees are just holding on, unable to provide the required cooling benefits. Better species selection and irrigation practices are critically needed to build healthy thriving urban forests. This project will plant over 200 trees across the Penrith and Blacktown local government areas, focusing on those areas in critical need of additional canopy cover and cooling benefit (hot-spots). A selection of species, with contrasting climate-risk and cooling benefits, will be planted with and without access to stormwater in passive irrigation storage pits. Tree performance will be monitored to assess growth, leaf transpiration and stress over the establishment period. The project will quantify species drought/heatwave tolerance and cooling capacity in the streets of Western Sydney. Furthermore, the project will determine the benefit of passive irrigation for diverse, cool, urban forests. The outcomes of the project will inform the delivery of urban greening and cooling strategies to improve resilience and liveability across Greater Sydney. |

Project summary |
This project aims to deliver large, high-quality urban street trees in the heart of the Parramatta CBD. The CBD has extremely low levels of canopy coverage due to the delivery of city-shaping infrastructure, the contested nature of streetscapes in the CBD, as well as large amounts of private development throughout. Council is undertaking significant public domain upgrades in the CBD to improve the streetscape for pedestrians and incorporate significant high-quality tree planting. It is envisaged that these plantings will transform the appearance, reputation, and microclimate of the CBD’s streetscape. |

Project summary |
Georges River Council is revitalising Hurstville CBD by delivering quality green open space and innovative public domain improvements. The project will transform a car park, known as Palm Court, into a permanent public open space. Additional tree planting will increase the urban tree canopy and reduce the urban heat island effect at a micro level. The innovation of the project is in the transformation of the space itself and the complexity around tree planting in urban centres. |

Project summary |
This project will create green corridors within the high heat index areas of Brookvale industrial area, Roseberry Street industrial area and John fisher Park Curl Curl to reduce the heat island effect by planting 250 canopy trees in the streetscape, footpath and carpark frontage areas. These locations are heavily urbanised with primary surface areas comprising road, footpath and expanses of bitumen with an intense level of summer heat absorption and reflection. The locations have a current canopy cover of 0–10% and the streets and carparks have few to no trees making these sites intensely hot in summer. |
