The NSW Government has prepared a Local Housing Strategy Guideline (PDF, 6.2 MB) to support and guide councils to develop their local housing strategies.

Once exhibited and finalised, Greater Sydney councils’ local housing strategies must be sent to the Department of Planning and Environment for assessment and approval. For an update on the preparation, assessment and approval of the strategies, go to the NSW Planning Portal's Local Housing Strategies Tracker.

Strategy approval process

We have developed a collaborative approval process to assess each council’s strategy and are working with councils to implement the strategies.

The process involves a rigorous assessment against the requirements outlined in the Local Housing Strategy Guideline. We seek advice from other state agencies, including the Greater Sydney Commission and Transport for NSW.

Local housing strategies may be informed by local strategic planning statements. Find out more at Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
