Urban greening

Creating a sustainable, liveable and cooler Greater Sydney

To create a more sustainable, liveable and cooler urban environment, we need to improve urban greening. This means building more resilient communities with greater urban canopy and green cover. This leads to more shade, cleaner air and beautiful spaces.

The NSW Government has several initiatives to help address urban heating, grow greener neighbourhoods and improve the overall urban environment.

The Greening our City Program aims to increase green cover across Greater Sydney and contribute to an uplift in urban canopy coverage to 40% by 2036.

Everyone can plant one tree whether it's in your backyard or on your balcony. Because when everyone plants one, it’s better for everyone.

Valuing green infrastructure and public spaces

The department has developed a valuation framework that will help ensure green infrastructure and public spaces are planned for, costed and delivered as part of future projects and programs.
