Jobs boost for Waterloo Metro Quarter

18 June 2021

The Waterloo Metro Quarter will get an injection of thousands of new jobs, as a result of changes approved by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.

Executive Director of the Department for Key Sites, Anthea Sargeant, said the original concept for the area will now be updated to provide more jobs, make the area more walkable and allow for more sunshine.

“This amendment means 3,000 new jobs can be conveniently located right on top of a world- class metro station, boosting productivity and helping people spend less time commuting and more time with their families,” Ms Sargeant said.

“A 26 m reduction in building height will also result in more sunlight for nearby residents, which is a great result for the community and help create a welcoming and vibrant destination to live in, work in and enjoy.”

These changes have been made to the concept approval only, with the detailed design and construction of the entire precinct, including the northern building, subject to separate development applications that are currently under final assessment by the department.

Once completed, the Waterloo Metro Quarter will include:

  • 220 new homes, including 70 social housing dwellings and 24 affordable homes;
  • 35,000 m2 of offices and shops;
  • 2,600 m2 of public space, including pedestrian links from Raglan Street and Botany Road through to Cope Street Plaza;
  • Community facilities; and
  • Parking for 155 vehicles.
