The department has an important role in assessing and determining proposals for State significant projects in NSW.
As part of this, we welcome feedback submissions on State significant projects from the community, government agencies and other stakeholders.
Your submission on a project helps us better understand the views of the community, which in turn helps to inform our assessment of the project leading to improved design of projects, reduced environmental impact and ecologically sustainable development.
Submissions on State significant projects must be made online through the NSW Planning Portal during the project’s exhibition period. There are help and resources on the portal including a step-by-step guide on How to make a submission on a State significant application (PDF, 1.2 MB) and answers to frequently asked questions.

If you think you'll need help making a submission using the portal, it's a good idea to contact Service NSW sooner rather than later. Ensure you give yourself plenty of time to make a submission before the project’s exhibition end date.

Lendlease Communities, have submitted a request to modify the Calderwood concept plan, seeking approval for additional housing supply.
Amended proposed concept plans for Cockle Bay have been lodged with the department and include a new retail shops, bars and restaurants, along with a commercial office tower up to 195 m in height.
Energy from waste technology involves the thermal treatment of waste or waste-derived materials for the recovery of energy.
In 2016 the department received concept plans for the Harbourside Shopping Centre. The plans include a new retail shopping centre, residential apartment tower, and improvements to the public domain.
The Hunters Hill remediation project relates to 3 Government owned properties at 7–11 Nelson Parade, Hunters Hill.
The Inland Rail is a freight rail line connection between Melbourne and Brisbane. The route will be approximately 1,700 km in length and include over 1,000 km of major upgrades and enhancements and 600 km of new track via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
Ivanhoe Estate is the first major project proposed under the Future Directions policy and Communities Plus program. The concept and Stage 1 works applications for the redevelopment of Ivanhoe Estate have now been approved.
In June 2009, the Aboriginal Housing Company received concept approval from the department for a development in Redfern. The Aboriginal Housing Company named the development the Pemulwuy Project.
In 2017 the State Environmental Planning Policy (Educational Establishments and Child Care Facilities) was introduced with provisions that apply to school State Significant Development applications.
In August 2017, Frasers Property Australia lodged a modification application to the Concept Plan Approval for the Shell Cove Boat Harbour Precinct.
The new Sydney Fish Market was approved by the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces in June 2020. The department assessed 2 State Significant Developments applications separately for the Concept Proposal and Stage 1 demolition works as well as a Stage 2 works for the construction of the new Sydney Fish Market.
The Art Gallery of NSW has unveiled plans to transform the gallery through a major expansion. The working title for the project is 'Sydney Modern'.
