The NSW Government Architect has prepared a draft Macquarie Street Strategic Framework for public consultation. The final framework will drive the revitalization of the Macquarie Street East Precinct.

The key objectives for the revitalization are to:

  • conserve and enhance heritage assets
  • include sympathetic development to provide funds for maintenance and capital works
  • improve public access
  • create better connectivity to and through the precinct.

The framework is a high-level document that:

  • considers the broader physical, historical and cultural context
  • informs decision-making on opportunities within the study area
  • form a basis for stakeholder discussions, public consultation and potential NSW Government endorsement.

The framework outlines necessary urban design considerations and potential projects. It also establishes a logic for evaluating the merit of current and future proposals. Together, these provide the best chance to create an integrated civic precinct and lead to a better connected and functioning city.
